A L L   I   G O T
      (for Murrel)

I have a buddy.  His name is Art. He has a sister.   Her name is Murrel.   Well.   Murrel succombed to cancer just before Thanksgiving, 2oo9.   Prior to this, Art had wanted to give Murrel something.   A song.   Art wanted to give Murrel a song.   Art is a good man.  One day he says, “Roy.  I've been thinking about your song,  All I Got.   I want to give that song to my little baby sister before she passes.   Would that be okay with you?”

Me, I says, “Of course.  Yes.”  Of course, he could give this song to his sister.   But first, I hoped to make changes that would better reflect Murrel's situation.  For this, I called on another buddy of mine, Sara.  She's survived cancer after being told she wouldn't.  Given her experience, I asked Sara if she had any ideas about re-writing a few of the original lines.  She did.  Thank you, Sara.  Thank you, Art.

Thank you, and good luck.

I stand humbled, seeking grace.
When I find myself, here again - in this place.
Condemned, wretched one.  Innocence is all I got.

I’ve worked hard to find good in this life.
When the time comes to meet my Maker,
He’ll look me in the eye, and He’ll say,  “Hm.
You wasn’t the best, but I seen how you tried.
You done earned yourself rest.‿br>
Maybe it’s the color of my skin.
Where I come from or my next of kin.
I can’t change the cut of my cloth.
Innocence is all I got.

Yet I’ve been convicted of being young - or old.
Perhaps I’m ignorant, or I haven’t a home.
I've been disabled.  Well, so what?
Innocence is all I got.

I’ve worked hard to find good in this life.
When the time comes to meet my Maker,
He’ll look me in the eye, and He’ll say,  “Hm.
You wasn’t the best, but I seen how you tried.
You done earned yourself rest.‿br>

I believe my time has come, no more surprise.
The future’s right here, right before my very eyes.
And I would not change the cut of this cloth.

Innocence is all I got.

I’ve worked so hard
to make some good of this dear life.
Now it’s time to meet my Maker -
There He is looking me in the eye.
And He’s saying,
“My sweet child you was -
You was never the best!
But I seen how you tried.
Yes, I know how you’ve cried.
Well, night has fallen.
The day, the day is ended now.
Lay your weary head down.

You done earned yourself rest.‿br>

I stand humbled, seeking grace.
When I find myself, here again - in this place.
Condemned, wretched one.
Innocence is all I got.
